Where We Fish, What We Do

Luther Dell Camp on Boy Lake has been a main site for the past ten summers. Fishing is good on Boy Lake where that camp is located as well as on nearby lakes. GEM also conducts camps at Lindisfarne near Pine City and at other Bible camps and retreat centers and at a week in the BWCA.
Day camps in the metro area of Mpls./St. Paul round out GEM's summer fishing program.

Individual and team "Pepsi Challenge"(pop awards) tournaments are always exciting. Individuals win for the top fish caught of each species for the week and sometimes for the number of fish caught. Team tournaments pit boat against boat for a limit of northern, bass, or crappies, or for a multi species catch. The tournaments are usually very close, decided on sometimes by only an inch or two. It's pretty much catch and release except for saving enough for a fish fry brunch at the end of the week and an occasional shore lunch.
Sara and her brother, Brenden did very well on a Longville area lake. It was Sara's first time fishing, her first time on a boat. On her very first cast Sara caught her very first fish--a 5 pound bass!
Mule Lake is still a favorite. It's a good lake for a multi-species tournament, and we usually fish it once a week. It's our favorite smallmouth lake near camp. For Dave, Mule Lake is nostalgic since that's where he and Margo had a cabin and where GEM Camps first started. Here's a 21 incher that Dave caught in the summer of 06 and released. It's nicknamed "orange roughy." There are bigger ones to be caught.
Our best ever northern pike fishing came during the last camp of 2002 on an afternoon on Upper Red Lake when we caught a dozen northerns between 12 and 23 pounds. Dave landed the 23 pounder and Elliott, at age 15, caught a 20 pounder . Mike and Mitch caught fish almost as big. Musky tackle and large spinner baits with orange blades seemed to work best on that day. Several of us have tried to repeat that day on Red Lake but without much luck.
Fishing is what we do most of the time at GEM Fishing Camps, but, that's not the very most important part of camp. Each morning we meet for times of praise and worship or often singing led by guide Mike Thompson. Christian videos and Bible studies are included. Each summer we study a different book of the Bible and memorize key verses.

I have been directing GEM camps for 19 years and enjoy it more each summer. I hope you will come to camp and bring a friend with you. Don't forget about the monthly club meetings/ fishing outings we have throughout the year.
