HistoryGreat Expectations Ministries was started in 1987 as a fishing ministry to youth. It was incorporated in 1992 as a 501 (C) (3) non profit organization. GEM's first base of operations was on Mule Lake near Longville, Minnesota where GEM's founder Dave Lindmark and his wife, Margo, had a cabin. Dave is a teacher at Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis. After several summers of bringing youth to the cabin to experience fishing in the Longville area and to learn of God's word, the outreach was expanded to weekly summmer camps at Girl Lake Resort in Longville. For the past six summers, GEM camps have been held near Longville and Remer, MN. at Luther Dell Camp on Boy Lake. Luther Dell is owned by Lake Wapogasset Bible Camp at Amery, WI. GEM is not affiliated with Luther Dell or Wapo, but it shares meals and praise and worship times with the host camp, and it benefits from the use of Luther Dell's facilities. Other GEM camps are held at Lindisfarne near Pine City and in the BWCA. Day camps in the Mpls./St.Paul metro area are also conducted. In 1997 GEM Club was formed by Jim Bonin and is now led by several adult leaders. It continues to be a year round outreach to many of the same youth who come to GEM Camp in the summer as well as to other metropolitan youth. Combined fishing outings and meetings are held monthly throughout the year, usually on a Saturday and an occasional full weekend. For more details about the camp and club, see the GEM Club and GEM Camp pages on this web site. |
